Different scales
A volume profile aggregates: it takes a period — a day, a week, a range — and adds up all the volume by price level. The output is a map of levels that changes slowly.
A footprint does not aggregate but opens up: inside each candle you see how much traded at a level into the bid and how much into the ask. That is data about a process, and it goes stale in minutes.
What only a footprint shows
The split into aggressors. A profile knows how much volume traded at a price but not who initiated it. A footprint does — hence delta, imbalances and absorption.
Absorption can only be read this way: aggressors keep hitting one side in size while price does not move. On a profile that would look like nothing more than a dense area.
Which to choose
If you need levels for the day ahead, the profile. If you need to understand what is happening at a level right now, the footprint.
In practice they are used together, and in that order: the profile answers where to look, the footprint what is happening there. Starting with the footprint means staring at numbers without the question they answer.
Both need real exchange volume and are therefore most reliable on futures and crypto.
What neither can do
Both describe what has already happened. The profile is the distribution of a past period, the footprint the process of the last few minutes. Neither answers where price will go: they provide context, and the decision comes from structure.
Both are useless without trustworthy volume. On forex what is shown is tick volume — the number of price changes, an estimate from a single data provider. Usable, but not proof.
And both work poorly on higher timeframes. A cluster picture on a daily candle loses meaning: too many different things happen inside a single day for it to add up to one observation.
Frequently asked questions
- How does a footprint differ from a volume profile?
- In scale and content. A profile adds up volume by price over a period; a footprint opens it up inside each candle, split into aggressive buying and selling.
- Which should I learn first?
- The volume profile: it gives levels and is understandable without deep immersion. A footprint helps once you already have a decision from the chart that needs refining.
- Do I need both at once?
- No. They complement each other but work on different horizons. For many the profile is enough; the footprint is for those trading intraday and deciding at a level.
