Footprint: volume and delta inside the candle

An ordinary candle tells you four numbers — open, high, low, close. A footprint opens it up: how much volume traded at each price level, and which side was the aggressor.

What a footprint chart shows

The candle is split into price levels, and each level carries two numbers: volume executed into the offer, and volume executed into the bid. The difference is delta. Where delta is strongly positive but price did not rise, buyers were absorbed by resting limit orders. Where volume piles up inside a narrow band, a large participant was most likely working there. None of this is an entry signal — it is an explanation of what happened inside the bar, and without it any candle stays a guess.

How traders actually use it

The most common use is checking a break. The level is taken out, but there is almost no volume on the break and delta does not confirm the move: that is usually a stop run, not the start of a trend. The second use is finding where initiative changed hands — at a reversal you can normally see aggressive buying stop moving price up. The third is auditing your own entry: if you buy where volume density sits against you, your stop is closer than the candle chart suggests.

Why it costs nothing here

A footprint is computed from the public trade tape that crypto exchanges publish, and that data costs us nothing. Hence the honest limitation: there is no footprint for forex, metals or equities — not here and not anywhere — because no consolidated trade tape exists on those markets, where trading is split across brokers and venues. If a service promises you a footprint on XAU/USD, it is showing you the volume of one broker, not of the market.

Who this is for

  • Traders who work from levels and want to tell a real break from a stop run
  • Scalpers who care about initiative inside the bar, not only its shape
  • Anyone who has used footprint in paid terminals and would rather not pay a subscription for it
  • Anyone studying order flow who wants to dissect moves after the fact alongside replay

Frequently asked questions

Which instruments have a footprint?
Crypto pairs — those have a public trade tape. Forex, metals and equities do not: no consolidated tape exists on those markets, so volume-at-price cannot be computed correctly, by us or by paid services.
Do I need to install or pay for anything?
No. The terminal runs in the browser on desktop and phone, and footprint is open as soon as you sign in with Google or Telegram. There are no tiers and no trial periods.
How is a footprint different from a volume indicator?
A volume indicator gives one number for the whole candle. A footprint breaks that number down by price level inside the candle and splits it between buying and selling — you see not just how much, but where and on whose initiative.

Other things the terminal does

VVozny is a terminal for analysis and learning — not a broker and not an exchange. Orders are filled on a demo account and in the replay simulator. You trade real money wherever your account is held.
